Personalisation is giving relevant information to your customers. In the real world this is called Customer service. Asking people questions about themselves and what they are interested in, to then get a better idea of how best you can serve them has been around for 1000’s of years.
So how is this relevant to you and your Sitecore site?
Being able to customise information to the specific customer that is visiting your Website is a very powerful tool.
Is the holy grail of personalisation.
What types of things can be Personalised on a Sitecore site?
You can personalise anything (within reason) from a whole page to a specific image on a page. Often people use the homepage as a place to show specific promo tiles that relate to the visiting customer. You can also personalise items such as carousels by placing a set of items in there to highlight based on the customer or in a more subtle way by reordering the items to show the most relevant item first.
I will be covering in more detail the specific types of Personalisation in my next article.
However my last words of advice are to use this new found power wisely and don’t get too creepy, this in real world terms is called stalking and looking over peoples shoulders while they are in your store. Give them some distance and just show relevant things at the appropriate times.
Best of luck
